So what are the 8 foods you should buy organic whenever possible?
From a nutritional stand point, organic milk has higher levels of omega-3 fats, which protect you against heart disease and may decrease the risk of depression, stroke, cancer and other diseases for you.
The problem with conventional milk is that unlike organic ones, the cows are often injected with bovine growth hormone (BGH, or synthetic ones: either recombinant bovine growth hormone, rBGH; or recombinant bovine somatotropin, rBST). These growth hormones are injected to increase the cow’s milk production.
However these hormones cause the cows to become sickly. Not only that, these hormones have also been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer in humans!
Antibiotics are then routinely used by dairy farmers to prevent infections in the sickly cows. These drugs would then show up in the milk the cows produce.
We’ve all heard of the phrase: “An apple a day keeps the doctors away!” But what you may not know is this: More than 45 different pesticides have been found on apples. Many of which are known carcinogens, suspected hormone disrupters, neurotoxins and reproductive toxins. Farmers spray various chemicals to get rid of fungus and insects.
Pesticide residue is also found in other apple based products such as apple juice, apple sauce, etc. Therefore it’s best to get apple products that are organic.
USDA have detected more than 60 different pesticides on celery. Many of which are known carcinogens, suspected hormone disrupters, neurotoxins and reproductive toxins. Making it a wise choice to get your celery organic!
There might be as many as 86 pesticides on the skin of cucumbers you buy. It might be refreshing to include these into your salad, but potentially exposing yourself and your loved ones to 86 different pesticides surely isn’t. You can reduce the chances of ingesting them by peeling the skin.
Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins A, B2, C, and K as well as iron, folic acid, manganese and magnesium. There are many good reasons to include these into your diet, however spinach could be laced with over 50 different pesticides.
7. Bell peppers / Capsicum
Bell peppers are an excellent source of carotenoids and also a source of over 30 different members of the carotenoid nutrient family. However, did you know that about 68 percent of peppers contain pesticides and over 50 different pesticide are found on them.
8. Berries (Strawberries, Blueberries, etc)
Berries may be superfoods but they pose a potential health risk unless you go organic. They have thin skins which makes them particularly vulnerable to pesticides. And it’s impossible to wash them off once the toxins get absorbed into the fruit itself.
Now then, what are the foods that are relatively safe (i.e. don’t have to buy organic ones)
